On Wednesday I was visiting a client in Kentucky. A group of 6 or so of us had gone to lunch at the local Mexican restaurant. It was something the folks from the plant did every Wednesday so John and I were invited to tag along. It was a fun social time where the discussions ranged from the size of the burritos to what to eat when you went to the local Dairy Queen. There was an older gentleman at the table, Russell, who I had done the exact same thing with 6 weeks before. We shook hands and exchanged pleasantries as you do.
When we were going back to the plant John casually mentioned that Russell's wife had died 2 weeks before from breast cancer. I wouldn't have known that if John hadn't mentioned it.
As I travel I tend to bump into lots of people particularly at the airport - it can make me grumpy. I see people getting upset at the smallest things - and I do too far too often. I guess sometimes you just don't know whats going on to people you know and especially those you don't.
It's certainly a lesson for me - a little kindness and understanding, while sometimes difficult, never hurts.
